Dan and I relied mostly on international snail mail to communicate for 9 months while he was in Versailles, as he had no phone and it was about 2 years before email really caught on. It was slow, but surprisingly reliable.

snail mail is pretty reliable if it's between Europe and the US. I am still waiting for a postcard mailed in October from Chile.
