Democracy in America, Then and Now, a Struggle Against Majority Tyranny
What would Alexis de Tocqueville, the visiting Frenchman who authored Democracy in America in 1835, think of the state of democracy in America today?
One of the things that De Tocqueville thought would counter majority tyranny was Americans' penchant to form local organizations so that there were institutions, not just individuals, who had power to stand up to government run amok. What's so scary about Bush's flavor of tyranny is that Rove&Co. have so effectively used these local organizations as the instrument of "majority" tyranny, not the check & balance it should be.
