Top 25 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 90s
Even though you're shaking your head, this would make for a decent afternoon listen. I've sung along to every one of these at one point or another and played along on the guitar to at least a third.

The comments at stereogrum (from whence this link is pilfered) have some selections that would have made this a better list.

“Life is a Highway” - Tom Cochrane (I gotta agree — this list needs this song)
“Unbelievable” - EMF
“The Way” - Fastball
“Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” - Crash Test Dummies
“Sex and Candy” - Marcy Playground
“In the Meantime” - Spacehog

These are real one hit wonders. Sinead O'Connor, Blur, The Breeders, and James? Maybe because I actually owned records by these bands, I hold them in a different space than Tom Cochrane and Spacehog.

Freedy Johnston is listenable and all, but if you start humming “Bad Reputation” on your friend's porch at 2am, he's going to fall asleep. Bust out with “Life is a Highway” and he may run to the corner for another 6-pack. The night has plenty of mileage left.

blur a one hit wonder?! never, no way jose.

What's weird about this list is how many of these acts had multiple hits. I mean, I'm not a huge Sinead O'Connor fan, but Mandinka was a pretty big single. For Blur, that Boys/Girls song was a huge hit. Even Semisonic had a followup hit or two (Chemistry).

4 Non-Blondes, Chumbawumba, Alannah Myles: now those are some one-hit wonders.

Gotta disagree with you about Freedy Johnston (even though I must grudgingly admit that he only had one hit). I love Bad Reputation and almost the whole remainder of that album. I have--count 'em--six records by that guy. It just doesn't seem right to call him a one-hit wonder.

And you've sung along to Hanson? Really?

I like Freedy Johnston alright too. But he doesn't exactly keep a party hummin in the wee hours.

I think all can agree Blur is not a one-hit wonder. Or if they are technically a one-hit wonder stateside, they don't deserve the company.

No, I guess I haven't sung along to Hanson, but I've probably tried. Yeah.

Jay, in addition to your selections, i would like to add "All I Want to Do Is Thank You" by Geggy Tah, "Stay" by Lisa Loeb & "One of Us" by Joan Osbourne. Though i like that Spacehog song, i'm not sure it was big enough to make the list with the others you mention.

May 17 2005

Yep, agree. All 3 of those I can immediately sing in my head. I like the Spacehog song, but have you ever tried to sing it for somebody? Impossible.

Aha! When I redesigned I had messed something up causing all the comments to stick to this post. I figured something was up when three people in a row were commenting on various other posts here but it kept showing up on this one.

Carry on.
