Pitchfork's Top 100 Singles of 2000-2004
They're going to fuck this up. They're not going to include “Letter from an Occupant” by The New Pornographers (otherwise known as Jason's favorite song ever). They're going to leave out “Ignition (Remix)” because R. Kelly is a messed-up child molester. “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” by The Darkness was a fad they'd rather leave in the embarrassing past, right? “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” by The Arcade Fire must be even too hip and recent for a Pitchfork retrospective list. Eminem's “Lose Yourself”? “The Rat” by The Walkmen? “Ms Jackson”? And “Maps”, too, by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs?
Every one of those songs has made the commute I used to make alot faster as I sang and screamed along in my car, completely out of rhyme and key. Add “No Children” by The Mountain Goats (though, not exactly the material of popular singles) and that'd be side A.
And, Jesus, I didn't even mention “Move Your Feet” by Junior Senior” or “Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone” by Ted Leo. On to side B.
That list is a bit narrow, I think, even though it's trying really hard not to be.
I'd leave off any Justin or Brittany songs just on principle.
It's a Pitchfork list. Of course it's gonna be narrow and trying really hard. But it still has 9 or 10 of my favorite songs of the last couple years.
Oh, I see.
I think for me the only ones in my top ten would be:
White Stripes "Seven Nation Army"
Modest Mouse "Float On"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Maps"
First, Jason, let me say how grateful I am for your mixes. I almost always enjoy every single song on them. It has allowed me to explore music I would otherwise never have heard. You have done us (at least me!) and the (mostly-)indie music industry a great service by compiling them so well and so frequently!
THAT said, I have to question this R. Kelly thing again. I know that I am not the only person on the planet who does not like Ignition (Remix or otherwise). Bounce bounce bounce what?
Peace out, bro. ;)
