Guidelines for focusing on learning from kottke.org. A workplace diversity trainer presented the following 10 items:

  1. Release the need to be right.
  2. Welcome one another's thoughts and opinions.
  3. Suspend judgment.
  4. Listen for understanding, not rebuttal.
  5. Make personal statements by using "I" rather than "you".
  6. Clarify first what was said before you challenge someone.
  7. Take time to reflect.
  8. Lean into discomfort.
  9. Respond first to what was said before making your point.
  10. Have fun.
#4? Hell no. I chalk that one up to genetics. I never had a chance.

What you had to say:

Can I print this out and post it at school? Sorry, I'm not listening to your answer, I'm too busy thinking of a rebuttal. Also, not that I know what you said, but you're wrong. Am I not addressing your point? Well, mine is better anyways.

Oh, you said something? Sorry I was already typing my response. I didn't bother to read what you said.
